A guide to Makosh ingredients

Makosh CO2 protein concentrate (hydrolyzed). Our protein is based on hemp protein found in the hemp seed. CO2 hemp protein concentrate offers:

  • Protein concentration above 72%
  • Dietary fiber content no more than 1% by mass
  • Total sugar content less than 1% by mass
  • Residual oil content less than 2%
  • Starch no more than 1%

About hemp protein

Composition: hemp seed protein contains two main types of protein — edestin (65–70%) and albumin (30–35%). Edestin makes up the bulk of hemp seed protein. In composition, edestin is close to the globulins found in human blood plasma.

About edestin:

  • By structure, it belongs to the seed's storage proteins (globulins)
  • An easily digestible plant protein

Edestin is an easily digestible plant protein that is highly compatible with the human digestive system.

Production using our technology

The technology we have developed is not used anywhere in the world's practice of plant protein production. Our technology is recognized as a green processing technology and makes it possible to preserve protein in its natural, living form.

Hemp protein production at the Makosh plant

Our protein concentrate production technology consists of two stages.

Stage 1. Preliminary milling of the hemp seed kernel in an aqueous medium. As a result, sugars and fiber are removed with the water into the milk, while the remaining fraction — consisting of pure protein and oil — is preserved in its original form.

Stage 2. Separation of the resulting fraction under high pressure with carbon dioxide (CO2 fluid) into extraction oil and protein concentrate. The processing temperature does not exceed 40 °C. This makes it possible to preserve the protein in its natural, living form, while the oil, not subjected to high temperatures, approaches refined oil in its characteristics. The result is a defatted protein concentrate with a protein content above 72%, obtained by the green organic technology of supercritical fluid CO2 extraction.

Drawbacks of other technologies

Other technologies exist for obtaining plant protein. Below are some of them and their drawbacks.

Kernel pressing — partial removal of oil followed by milling the press cake into a powder (the method of obtaining hemp protein used by most producers):

  • Low protein concentration
  • High residual oil content — more than 18–25%
  • Insolubility in water
  • Poor absorption by the body
  • Short shelf life
  • Specific odor and taste
  • Presence of carbohydrates (sugars)
  • The ingredient cannot be used in the production of finished products

Alcohol extraction (the most popular technology):

  • The concentrates dissolve poorly due to the effect of the alcohol
  • Presence of residual impurities in the finished product

High-temperature processing under alkaline conditions:

  • The biological value of the protein is reduced
  • The protein is poorly absorbed by the body
  • Due to the thermal effect, essential amino acids are partially lost: arginine, serine, threonine, and lysine
  • When heated to 200 °C, most amino acid residues decompose

Extraction with chemical reagents (for example, hexane — a saturated hydrocarbon):

  • The technology leads to a loss of natural properties, as with high-temperature processing
  • Presence of chemical impurities in the finished product

Isoelectric precipitation:

  • Sulfur-rich albumin-like proteins may remain in the supernatant (the liquid above the precipitate) — meaning some proteins will not make it into the finished product
  • The amino acid composition changes and the biological value of the protein isolate is reduced compared to the original raw material

Please note: inexpensive melamine, cyanuric acid, ammeline, and ammelide are sometimes used by unscrupulous producers to inflate the apparent protein content of products, when expensive concentrated proteins are replaced with cheap, low-quality ingredients. Such a composition was detected in contaminated imported raw material.

Hemp non-dairy milk

The most valuable thing in our non-dairy milk is hemp protein. It is a complete plant protein, as it contains the full range of amino acids the human body needs. Hemp protein can fully replace animal protein, which is why Makosh non-dairy milk is ideal for vegetarians and people with intolerance to lactose, soy, and gluten.

Cosmetics with CO2 extracts:
